Kinematic, the indie band from Australia

With five studio albums (and number six on the way), a compilation, a soundtrack, a live album/film and a whole bunch of singles, Kinematic's music has been described as indie rock, pop, folk, alternative and electronic, all of which is confusingly true. This site is a good spot to learn more about this li'l indie band that knows no boundaries.

TJS @ Catfish   Fitzroy   Fri 7 Aug 2026
The Joyful Strains

30 Gertrude St, Fitzroy, VIC

Long before Kinematic there was The Joyful Strains — the punk band that existed long before anyone thought maturity was a good idea. Jonny Strain, Davy Strain, Dizzy Strain, Squizzy Strain and Eduardo de Marquis III spent years writing noise, causing trouble and somehow never actually playing a show. Until now.

On Friday 7 August, The Joyful Strains finally hit the stage for the first time ever, supporting The Pernicious at their album launch.

One night only.
First show.
Last show.
No rules. No nostalgia. No guarantees.

The Things I Do (No Excuse Remix)   Sat 6 Jun 2026
The Things I Do

Ever had the feeling you've messed things up with your friends and you're not entirely sure why, but you wish you hadn't? Yep, us too.

The Things I Do is one of Kinematic's most enduring tunes. Still being played in our live sets today, it appeared on our first EP in 2001, and was re-recorded and re-released on our debut album Time & Place in 2005. As a true independent act we only had the finances for an album or a couple of singles (on CD), and the album won out. So, 21 years later, it's super satisfying to give 'Things' the single status we always thought it warranted - especially as this remix by long-term collaborator Michael Stifter finally features Jippa's haunting violin. Lands on streaming services and Bandcamp on June 6th.

Harmony (Ooops I Bought A Pub Version)   Sat 2 May 2026
Harmony (Ooops I Bought A Pub Version)

It’s a little known fact that actor Shane Jacobson booked the first gig Kinematic ever played. In fact, Shane has called on us a few times – we’ve penned jingles and incidental music for his projects, and our song West Gate Bridge became the signature music in his 2020 documentary about that tragic bridge collapse.

So when Shane and director Dean Murphy told us they’d like to use our song Harmony as the theme song for their new TV series about buying, renovating and reopening the Dederang Hotel, we didn’t hesitate. We even recorded a slightly different version for them, which they’ve used for the opening and closing credits.

It was always a song about freedom and travelling at your own pace. Now it’s also a song about dropping into your favourite pub along the way.

Ooops I Bought A Pub premieres on Saturday 2 May, 8pm on Ch7 and streaming on 7+, and our "pub" version of Harmony is on Bandcamp and music streaming services everywhere on the same day.

Louder (The Loudest Remix)   Sun 28 Feb 2026
Louder

We’re pumped to announce some more stunning remix work by our long-time collaborator, the formidable Michael Stifter, in the form of an old crowd-pleaser and undisputed Perry family favourite, Louder.

Louder has been one of the few mainstays of our set for the last 20 years, usually beating a bunch of of other singles and lead tracks to make our live list. Even as we’ve turned the volume down over the last few years, Louder usually gets a guernsey - so much so we even put a quieter version out as a B-side last year.

But this is definitely not that. On Louder (The Loudest Remix), Stiffy turns Kinematic up to 11 - and we love the result.

The new remix is available exclusively a few days early on Bandcamp and on all other streamers from 28 February. Check it out NOW and, more importantly, do what the Perry family does and TURN IT UP!

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us at our 12th Kristmas Show at The Edinburgh Castle and an even bigger thumbs up if you donated!

Thanks to your generosity and that of all our guest acts (from A-Z: Almost Isabella, Gerard Daley, Simon Dodd, David Hosking, Sarah Liversidge, Tim Reid, Mark Sinton and Ryan Sterling) we raised over $1,500 for the Anna Wearne Trust to keep doing their fantastic work with young people. We were lucky enough to have known Anna and it's a cause we feel strongly about, so thank you all again - you can learn more about the Trust below.

Triptaka-san (20th anniversary)   Fri 5 Dec 2025
Tripitaka-san

For our fourth single of the year, we've dipped into the archives! It's been 20 years since we released our debut album Time & Place, and we're celebrating with some remixes - first up, it's the album opener Tripitaka-san (Irrepressible Remix). While it was the lead track, it was never a single back in 2005. That was still the era of the CD and we couldn't afford to release an album AND a single in that format, heavens no.

Available from 5 December on Bandcamp and soon after on your fave streaming services, this release comes with a 60s-era stereo remix of another track from the album – A Beginner's Guide To Narcolepsy (Retro Remix).

Art Deco Hotels   Fri 29 Aug 2025
Art Deco Hotels

Single numero tre for Kinematic in 2025 is the desert noir of Art Deco Hotels. The smell of gunsmoke is in your nostrils, the scorching sun beats you to the ground and a vindictive stranger is hot on your trail ... whatever you do, don't drink the water.

Available from 29 Aug on Bandcamp and all your fave streaming services, this one comes with a unique acoustic take of the ballad from our 2009 album Kites – Weak & Splendid (Mandolin Version) will keep your toes a-tapping and your hands a-clapping.

Don't Be Afraid   Fri 23 May 2025
Don't Be Afraid

After the release of the positively jaunty Seaside Town earlier this year, we're doing what we so often do – changing gears entirely. Don’t Be Afraid was conceived as a comfort to Mike’s youngest son on his first day of school, but in 2025 the song transcends its schoolyard origins and takes on new meaning, offering solace in a politically charged and war-torn world. The stirring strings that open the track were performed by bassist Mik and violinist Jippa, who first played with us on our debut album Time & Place and now joins us for live shows – yes, Kinematic is now a five-piece!

Don’t Be Afraid is available from 24 May on Bandcamp and all other streaming services from 31 May. The single release comes with an acoustic reimagining of our crowd favourite Louder (Quieter Version) as its B-side track and there's a 'shot-the-wrong-way-round' video hitting YouTube too.

Seaside Town   Fri 7 Feb 2025
Seaside Town

Inspired by Mike’s seasonal family trips to a caravan in Torquay, Seaside Town pays homage to anyone’s summer coastal escape. Or home ... with Gordo living on the other side of the bay on Melbourne’s Mornington Peninsula, a Kinematic tune about unwinding by the beach was probably inevitable. The song is infectious - we knew we were on to something special the very first time we played it live at the Peninsula SongRiders Club, with everyone jumping out of their seats for a dance. It's a feel good hit for every summer, everywhere!

Seaside Town is available from today on Bandcamp and all other streaming services from next Friday 14 Feb. The single release comes with an acoustic reimagining of our 2006 single Love & Grafitti as its companion track (what we called a B-side in the last century) and the brand new seaside video hits YouTube next week too. And if you're on the ninch or nearby, don't miss the Seaside single launch in Balnarring on Sat 29 Mar!
