Kinematic, the indie band from Australia

With five studio albums, a compilation, a soundtrack, a live album/film and a whole bunch of singles, Kinematic's music has been described as indie rock, pop, folk, alternative and electronic, all of which is confusingly true. This site is a good spot to learn more about the li'l indie band that knows no boundaries.

Kinematic gigs coming up

Edinburgh Castle   Brunswick   Sat 18 Jan 2024, 6-8pm
Kinematic Live

681 Sydney Rd, Brunswick, VIC

We're back at the EC, which has been getting to be more fun with each visit! It's summer so we'll be out in the beer garden (or front bar if the weather plays up) for a couple of sets of acoustic goodness. It's a great vibe here on a late arvo, with good food, good drink and good people. Drop in if you're in the neighbourhhood (there's no cover charge) and challenge us to play a cover version of something (we probably won't but you never know).

The Ferryman Bar   Queenscliff  Fri 31 Jan 2025, 2-5pm
Kinematic Live

Queenscliff Ferry Terminal, 1 Wharf Street East, Queenscliff, VIC

It's been a couple of years since we paid Queenscliff a visit but what better time of year is there for a return trip? Located right next to the ferry terminal, Ferryman has Blackman's Brewery beers and happy hour from 3pm, sweet! Mike and Gordo are tackling this one as a duo and, with three glorious summer hours to fill, they'll probably play the entire Kinematic catalog! Perfect for folks on the Belarine and a short ferry ride from the Mornington Peninsula too.

The Retreat Hotel   Brunswick  Wed 12 Feb 2025, 8-10pm
Kinematic Live

280 Sydney Rd, Brunswick, VIC

This is a great bar to catch a gig and we're chuffed to be heading back to the Retreat for a midweek two setter. Bringing our lo-fi sounds to the front bar, we'll be playing tunes from all our albums, plus previewing tracks from the upcoming record, which is due out soon soon soon. Free entry, two acoustic sets.

Studio mode   Sun 4 Aug 2024

If you're in Melbourne and surrounds, you'll know we've been playing a few gigs this year - which we love, but it does cut into our recording time! So we're taking a short break to knuckle down in the studio and get some new music ready to go. We'll keep you posted!

Vesuvius   Sun 17 Dec 2023
Vesuvius

In a stunning display of music marketing genius, we have not only paired our 15th annual Christmas giveaway (aka the ‘December 17 Specials’) with the release of the first single from our forthcoming sixth studio album, we've also turned the apparently radio-friendly single format on its head by making it a brooding and melancholy six-minute tragi-drama, Vesuvius.

What could possibly go wrong?

Perhaps a signifier of the shitty year that was 2023 - as if the pandemic years weren’t quite enough - Vesuvius is a musical imagining of fire and ash falling from a Pompeii sky on that fateful day in 79 AD. Not your typically festive Christmas fare, but hopefully ticking the box of thoughtful reflection that’s part of coming to the end of another year.

The surprise release also includes the slightly chirpier and much shorter Open Up Your Eyes. And if neither of these sound like your cup of eggnog, there’s always last year’s special giveaway, Christmas Forever. Vesuvius is available to stream and download for free, exclusively on our preferred music platform Bandcamp, on December 12 with all other platforms to follow on the very Kinematic date of December 17.
