Kinematic, the indie band from Australia

With five studio albums, a compilation, a soundtrack, a live album/film and a whole bunch of singles, Kinematic's music has been described as indie rock, pop, folk, alternative and electronic, all of which is confusingly true. This site is a good spot to learn more about this li'l indie band that knows no boundaries.

Kinematic gigs coming up

Single launch at Peninsula SongRiders   Balnarring   Sat 29 Mar 2025, 6-9pm
Kinematic Live

Westernport Yacht Club, 1 Foreshore Road. Balnarring Beach, VIC

Good people of the 'ninch and beyond, we're thrilled to be heading back to our fave music club to launch our brand new single Seaside Town.

Although originally inspired by Mike’s seasonal family trips to his caravan in Torquay, Seaside Town pays homage to anyone’s summer coastal escape. Or home ... with Gordo living on the other side of the bay on Melbourne’s Mornington Peninsula, a Kinematic tune about unwinding by the beach was probably inevitable. The song is infectious - we knew we were on to something special the very first time we played it live at, yes, the Peninsula SongRiders Club, with everyone jumping out of their seats for a dance. So it seems appropriate that we launch our latest single at Peninsula SongRiders as a thank you to one of our favourite local audiences. They helped convince us that this seaside song should be our next single.

With fabulous local guests the Jalgany Duo (Nola Lauch & Pete Dawson) and Gab Hester. Tix $25 online or $30 at the door (if available). Happy days!

Seaside Town   Fri 7 Feb 2025
Seaside Town

Inspired by Mike’s seasonal family trips to a caravan in Torquay, Seaside Town pays homage to anyone’s summer coastal escape. Or home ... with Gordo living on the other side of the bay on Melbourne’s Mornington Peninsula, a Kinematic tune about unwinding by the beach was probably inevitable. The song is infectious - we knew we were on to something special the very first time we played it live at the Peninsula SongRiders Club, with everyone jumping out of their seats for a dance. It's a feel good hit for every summer, everywhere!

Seaside Town is available from today on Bandcamp and all other streaming services from next Friday 14 Feb. The single release comes with an acoustic reimagining of our 2006 single Love & Grafitti as its companion track (what we called a B-side in the last century) and the brand new seaside video hits YouTube next week too. And if you're on the ninch or nearby, don't miss the Seaside single launch in Balnarring on Sat 29 Mar!

Studio mode   Sun 4 Aug 2024

If you're in Melbourne and surrounds, you'll know we've been playing a few gigs this year - which we love, but it does cut into our recording time! So we're taking a short break to knuckle down in the studio and get some new music ready to go. We'll keep you posted!

Vesuvius   Sun 17 Dec 2023
Vesuvius

In a stunning display of music marketing genius, we have not only paired our 15th annual Christmas giveaway (aka the ‘December 17 Specials’) with the release of the first single from our forthcoming sixth studio album, we've also turned the apparently radio-friendly single format on its head by making it a brooding and melancholy six-minute tragi-drama, Vesuvius.

What could possibly go wrong?

Perhaps a signifier of the shitty year that was 2023 - as if the pandemic years weren’t quite enough - Vesuvius is a musical imagining of fire and ash falling from a Pompeii sky on that fateful day in 79 AD. Not your typically festive Christmas fare, but hopefully ticking the box of thoughtful reflection that’s part of coming to the end of another year.

The surprise release also includes the slightly chirpier and much shorter Open Up Your Eyes. And if neither of these sound like your cup of eggnog, there’s always last year’s special giveaway, Christmas Forever. Vesuvius is available to stream and download for free, exclusively on our preferred music platform Bandcamp, on December 12 with all other platforms to follow on the very Kinematic date of December 17.
